Advent - 2nd December 2011 (Meanings)

In a few hours time a small band of workers will be sitting round a table making 150 Christingles for the service on Sunday.  It works like a factory line - one person to put a hole in the top of the orange, one to stick the red tape around the middle, one to put the candle (plus foil drip star) into the said hole, and a few sticking raisins and sweets on cocktail sticks, others to put four sticks into each orange.  Today there might be three of us so it could be a long session!  I will provide some much needed refreshment and we will work through until all oranges are suitably attired!  We stand them into patty tins which makes them more stable and safer to transport and light at the service.  Wish us well?

What do all these symbols of Christingle mean?  Here's the lowdown:

1.  The Lit Candle - symbolising Jesus, the light of the world
2,  The Orange - the world God has created
3.  The Red Tape - the blood of Christ
4.  The Cocktail Sticks bearing fruit and sweets - God's great creation
