Dorchester-on-Thames to Oxford over two days (Thames Path)

Allotments at Dorchester-on-Thames It's been around eleven months since I last picked up the Thames Path. The weather (flooded paths for most of spring) and time constraints have kept me from walking. Suddenly I had a window in my schedule and the weather looked promising, so I went for it and booked accommodation for my trip. My friend who walks with me can no longer walk long distances, but we worked out that she could join me at Culham and we would walk the final two and quarter miles into Abingdon where we would stay overnight, so she at least got a flavour of the walk. I had booked to stay at The White Hart in Dorchester-on-Thames overnight, a hotel the two of us stayed in last year. I took the train from London to Reading. Being a Sunday the X40 bus which runs between Reading and Oxford only runs once an hour and I was a bit early. I decided to go to Pret for a cuppa and use the facilities. Kingston Museum - A personal journey

One of the lovely windows in Kingston Museum. With the weather being so cold, it's mainly indoor events I am going to because everywhere is muddy. Kingston Museum is local to me. I go there for the occasional talk and exhibition, but it has been years since I walked around the museum itself. There are many displays of ancient tools and coins from a bygone age and lots of local history, some of which even I didn't know. I came across Thomas Abbott who had a china repair shop in the High Street. He famously smashed a jug into 289 pieces and then stuck it back together. The jug is on display in the museum. He also repaired pieces of Wedgewood's 'Frog Service' made for Catherine the Great. Of course Kingston-upon-Thames is known as the place where Kings were crowned. Aftermath Exhibition at Tate Britain

This was one exhibition I did not want to miss and I'm so glad I didn't. This is a sobering but brilliant exhibition covering the years 1916-1932 and features artists not only from England but Germany and France and others. What struck me was for all those artists the impact of being on the front was the same. It was interesting to see these picture alongside each other. What they saw and experienced came out through their art work, sometimes quite disturbingly. A few could never get over those experiences. At least one committed suicide. Some of my favourite painters had work here - Paul Nash, Stanley Spencer and Christopher Nevinson but I found others I admired, especially William Orpen. These paintings really brought home the destruction of war. Eight rooms made up the exhibition - the first was Remembrance: Battlefields and Ruins where the real cost cries out from the bodies of soldiers to the stark landscape of wire and burned stunted trees and graveyards.
