Today we celebrate St Patrick, Patron Saint of Ireland. Born around AD 387 into a Roman-British Christian family near the west coast of Britain he was captured as a young man and taken to Ireland where he was kept as a slave for six years. He managed to escape but the experience left a profound impression on and he later returned from his homeland as a missionary to the pagan population who worshipped the Sun and idols (though small pockets of Christians existed).
He joins that pocket of 'Celtic' Saints that interest me, and was indeed helped by St Brigid (who was also sold was a slave along with her mother, to a Druid landowner). She took vows under St Patrick and later went on to found the first convent at Kildare, Ireland.
