Hubby and I were really in Reading for the launch of an Anthology which features a story of mine (see my other blog) but seeing that there was a fair bit to do in Reading we decided to make a mini break of it. So we arrived on Monday and stayed in a hotel with the name Great Expectations where Charles Dickens once gave a public speech (it was then known as the Literary, Scientific and Mechanics Institute).
On our itinerary were walks along the Kennet and Avon Canal and the Thames Path. We achieved these and chose Wednesday for the Thames walk as the weather forecast said this would be the best day. It was and we ended up seven miles along the river at Pangbourne where we caught the train back to Reading. Other days we had to dodge showers but there were sunny periods too. Also worth a visit is the excellent museum at Reading Town Hall. Spread over three floors it contains lots of galleries with natural history objects, paintings, a room dedicated to Huntley & Palmers, the biscuit people who had a factory in Reading, and one whole floor with a replica of the Bayeux Tapestry. Even though I've seen this on TV it wasn't until I saw it for myself that I realised how long this thing is! Massive and incredible. Here is a snapshot of our four days.
