London Metropolitan Archives, Farringdon

On a beautifully warm day there I was dragging my friend around the streets trying to find an ancient well near Farringdon station. I'd heard about Clerks Well somewhere online and as we were in the area to visit the London Metropolitan Archives to view their Picturing Forgotten London exhibition this was a great opportunity. We'd actually walked past the building twice! You can read about it here. It is possible to see the well through the window of the building, but it wasn't possible to take a proper photo as the sun was shining off the glass, and to view the well from inside the building you have to make an appointment. Still, at least we found it.

By this time we were peckish. Opposite the Archive building is Spa Fields, lovely gardens with a Pizza restaurant backing on to it.  The pizzas are hand made at Panzo and delicious. We sat outside to eat. Service was quick and attentive. This is worth checking out if you are in the Clerkenwell area.

Finally we headed over the road to the Archives for the free exhibition. This began on the walls up the stairs to the first floor where we left our jackets and bags (free lockers), before heading upstairs to the main exhibition space. Here there is a selection of photos and some videos stills of various parts of London from past eras,. They look at things like industry, entertainment, the poor, schools and hospitals. Although it's only a small exhibition it is very interesting. It was hard to imagine London once being so rural. The exhibition continues until the end of October.

Before heading back to the station we dropped St James Church for a quick look followed by the cafe next door which we'd seen earlier called Grub on the Green where I was able to have a hot chocolate made with soya milk (it's great so many places are catching up with dietary needs). Time for a chat over drinks before going home.

This is a part of London I don't know and it was a pleasant surprise. We couldn't have wished for a nicer day.
