Banstead Woods |
It's bluebell time! There are plenty of places to walk a bluebell trail, but the one nearest me is Banstead Woods in Surrey, a 250 acre ancient woodland. I used to go there when I lived at home and my dad would drive out there on a Sunday afternoon after the traditional roast dinner. I've been meaning to visit for some years, but it's not easy to reach without your own transport. The nearest station is Chipstead (close by), but to get there I'd have to go further into London to come out again. It just so happened that my son had a day off work that worked for me, so we took the pooch with us.
There are several paths you can take, and the woods feature in the book Freedom Pass London by Bradt, which I have used before for a walk. We chose a walk more through the centre of the wood, rather than the one in the book. However, we begun on that path following the Narnia trail featuring characters from CS Lewis' The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe'. The woods go back to the Doomsday Book, and it thought that Anne Boleyn once owned them.

There's something magical about walking in woods. The dappled light and birdsong and those tall trees surrounding one. The bluebells were beautiful and spread throughout the woods. Photographing them never seems to do their colour justice. Perhaps I should have taken my bridge camera with me, but I only had my mobile. The weather was hot, so the shade of the trees was welcome.
Banstead Woods is a popular place, and the carpark was full when we arrived. Thankfully, on the second circuit, we found people leaving and nabbed a spot. This is also a popular place for dog walking, and ours certainly enjoyed his visit.
