The cafe at Wimbledon Park (tennis courts to the right) |
Wimbledon Park was our second choice of place to go. We were going to take our dog, Rue, to Richmond Park, but now the deer are giving birth, dogs have to be on leads. So, we looked for somewhere else to take Rue, where he could have time off the lead, and we ended up at Wimbledon Park.
I brought my kids here when they were younger, and when Covid lockdowns were lifted and you could sit inside a cafe with windows wide open, I met my writing buddy here and we wrote in the cafe with our coats on. Wimbledon Park is also the start of stage 6 of The Capital Ring walk to Richmond, which I walked not that long ago.
It's a great place to bring kids as there is a playground, and I am thrilled the little mini-golf has been resurrected at long last. There are tennis courts, and here you can book lessons for coaching (children and adults), and the lake, as well as green area running along by the athletics track. Across the lake you can spot the All England Tennis Club.

The lake |
The history of the park can be found here. There was once a manor house which was owned by the Earls Spencer. Later the park was sold to the Borough of Wimbledon, and later the golf course was sold to the All England Tennis & Croquet Club. However, the tennis club wants to develop part of the grounds to build more tennis courts, and locals are up in arms, fighting to keep their green space. I don't blame them. It's a lovely park.

The athletics track |
We bought hot chocolate from the cafe and sat outside in the sunshine to drink it. Rue got his off the lead walk, so all was good with the world.
Here is a short video I took when I began to walk stage 6 of The Capital Ring from Wimbledon Park.
