The week didn't start well. I had a raging temperature and spent most of last Monday on the sofa fighting a cold. I was hoping I'd be okay by Thursday as it was my big day. I'd be celebrating my 70th birthday and I wanted to be able to enjoy it. Luckily, the next morning I felt so much better, I could hardly believe it.
The weather, however, wasn't playing ball come Thursday as it rained nearly all day. At least I'd be indoors for most of it. After opening my cards, I set off for an early screening of the film The Salt Path, with a friend I've known since we were in our twenties. Our birthdays are just fifteen days apart and for many years we'd given up the present buying and now celebrate by organising a joint 'do' This year we are having a mini break to Stratford-on-Avon (that's next month). Before that there was the film to enjoy.
We arrived around 11.30am for the 12.15 showing. As it was right in the middle of lunchtime, we nipped into Wetherspoons for a late small veggie breakfast! We know how to go in style!
I've read all Raynor Winn's books, and my friend has read the first one, so we were both keen to see the film. It's not often I go to see a film after I've read the book because I'm usually disappointed, but I'd seen the actors interviewed and watched the trailers. I'd heard that the script was close to the book. We were not disappointed. The acting was brilliant, the scenery stunning and the film was moving and there were touches of humour.
I have walked a small part of the South West Coastal Path from St Ives to Zennor, and can verify how tough it is, and I wasn't carrying a heavy rucksack and tent in the wind and rain. Nor did I have a life-threatening disease. However, I was ill prepared and it's the only time I've been worried I was out of my depth. I was with my husband and he was brought up in Cornwall. I should have realised how different this walk would be to others I'd done, yet when we started off it was a normal path, but eventually the path turns to rocks and boulders. I guess I can see how people get into difficulty when they don't understand the terrain. One learns a lesson from that. Always plan well!
After the film, we slipped back into Wetherspoons for a chat and hot chocolate before I started back for home and went out for an early evening meal with the family. It was a lovely, full day.

It seemed my cold was fighting back because the next day I felt really tired and I've been fighting low energy since. Even so, I went to my usual short tennis class and played badly, but we never take ourselves seriously, and its always good fun. After lunch we set off for my other birthday activity. Crazy Golf. I love crazy golf as well as putting, and have done since I was a child. There is a Jurassic World Crazy Golf a walk away from where I live, but I asked my son if he could drive. That shows how tired I was. But we had a lovely time, and being early afternoon, we had the place to ourselves. We finished off with an ice cream sitting in the sunshine.

Since then I have been taking things easy. Saturday I really flopped and spent the time having naps, reading and starting the jigsaw puzzle my son and his wife bought me. The three of us have a passion for jigsaws and we now often swap jigsaws. Over the last two days, I have become hooked on this one and spent hours on it.
My friend asked me on my birthday, 'How do you feel?' I said 'Just the same as yesterday,' and we burst into laughter. Seventy is just a number. I've still not grown up and have no intention to! See you next week.
