You're Not Alone (Immersive Exhibition), Lightroom, Coal Drops Yard, London

Music has this ability to plunge you back to the time you first heard a song. It holds all kinds of memories and you remember where and what you were doing at the time. Music reawakens emotions, and as I get older, I find I become more nostalic about music I listened to when I was growing up.

David Bowie was one of those singers I grew up with, so when a friend suggested we book tickets to You're Not Alone at the Lightroom in Coal Drops Yard, I said yes. This is an immersive exhibition lasting about an hour. There is plenty of seating, and the film is projected on four walls.

It was like being at a David Bowie concert, but you could see more! Running through the programme is the voice of David Bowie himself. He talks about growing up in Bromley and how he always felt an outsider, trying to work out where he fitted in. He spoke about how he thought he was born at the wrong time and would have done well in vaudeville or theatre. He certainly liked his outfits, and, like many creative people, they were a mask to hide behind.

I found out a lot about David Bowie that I didn't know before. His words were projected above the screens, and his story was interspersed with his songs.

I first came across Bowie through Space Oddity and seeing him perform it on Top of the Pops in 1969 when I was a teenager. He produced some great hits over the years, and if you grew up with David Bowie too, you will enjoy this show. The Lightroom is a great exhibition space. I took a few videos and photos, and afterwards there was a little stroll around Coal Drops Yard itself and Regent's Canal.. This was a very enjoyable day out.
