There is so much to see at the Imperial War Museum, but a friend told me about a small exhibition on in the galleries on Level 3, Beauty and Destruction: Wartime London in Art. So three of us went along. I have seen many paintings by war artists on the front line over the years, but these paintings of London were all new to me.
The pictures showed the after effects of bombing on buildings, people sheltering in tube stations, the fires, blackouts, and in the last room were voices from people who lived through it. There were letters, including one from a little boy of six, whose writing was so neat it was amazing to think he'd written it. Of course, I knew of blackout curtains, but there were also black poppers to sew on to keep the curtains from parting and inadvertently letting light out.

I didn't take many photos, but this gives you a flavour. However, if you click here this will take you to the relevant page at the IWM where you can see and learn more.

| Not part of the exhibition, but I loved this: a dolls' house in wartime with shelter in the garden |
