Did anyone see Storyville - Four Born Every Second as part of BBC's Why Poverty Season? I was so moved by this programme as it followed four women about to give birth. They came from the UK, USA, Sierra Leone and Cambodia. What they each had in common was poverty but within each country we see the difference between even that through the healthcare given, education, opportunities, welfare. The UK and USA have the best facilities - the chances of a mother or baby dying is minimal. In the other two countries infant mortality is much higher and we witnessed in Sierra Leone where stillborn babies were delivered and a mother died only hours later. Medecins Sans Frontieres do such a wonderful job in difficulty circumstances all over the world. Do see their website as there is an article about this programme there.
The little twelve year old Cambodian boy (who looked eight or nine) was supporting his pregnant mother (with HIV) and sister by scavenging in rubbish (instead of attending school) for items that would give him enough money to buy rice for a day so they could eat. This little boy broke my heart. I just wanted to wrap my arms around him and do something for him, just to see him smile. It was a hard programme to watch but I am so glad I did. There is so much I could say but sometimes words are useless. Watch it for yourself - please follow this link to the BBC.
