Surviving January and a computer comes to life

All I seem to write on here are book reviews lately. Do I do nothing but read? Actually I do read a lot and apart from reading a poem on Saturday in my local library my life has been rather mundane of late. Somehow I survived January despite its trying to finish me off. We have a long list of things that need doing to the house, most of which became apparent in January! I won't bore you with the details but it took me a while to get my head round a lot of it.

I was starting to think that our bad luck was following us as when we went to see the film The Theory of Everything there was a power cut twenty minutes into the film. The cinema staff evacuated everyone to the car park where there was freezing rain and after a while announced that they would refund us when their power was back.  I thought I ought to give people a warning if they wanted to spend time with me!

We returned to the cinema last Wednesday and swapped our tickets so we could watch the film there and then. Yes, we saw it all the way through this time. Brilliant film. Take your hankies with you.

Meantime my eldest son, the computer whizz kid, has bought a new computer desk. How interesting, you say. But wait. This is no ordinary desk. This is a specialist desk. When he told me that the computer fitted inside the desk I thought he meant the tower. No. What he meant was that he had to take out every component from the computer tower and slot it into the specialist ports inside a drawer. The desk top is glass so you can see all the workings through it.

Two screens, drawer open, building on-going

We have been through this before with a see-through case and it is rather hypnotic watching lights flash when you make a command from the keyboard. This though is something else. My son is self-taught in computer building but I never realised just how wasted he is working at Maplin (where he is the computer expert).

Of course the question I (and others) ask is why? Why does he need two screens (most people are happy with one)? Why does he need a dedicated mouse and fancy keyboard (fold up ones, overlays, red lit?). I have no idea but this is his thing and even I am impressed, nay, gobsmacked by what he is doing. How does he know all this? How the heck can he take all those components out of his tower and slot them in here and they still work? And not content with one computer he has two running in this monstrosity (one dedicated to gaming). His bed and floor reminded me of a garage while he was building it, parts everywhere.

He is still working on it, adding, improving and he tells me he is going to buy more/better parts. Where will it end?

Having my own computer tech guy is very useful and I would always ask his advice before I bought another laptop or considered hand held appliances. He knows his stuff. He even has one of those watches that pick up emails or something. Don't ask! It has certainly been interesting if somewhat alarming to watch my son build this (including putting the desk together when it arrived - help from sporty son was welcome here).

Drawer open - most components have been slotted in

Here the drawer is shut but you can see all the workings and lights

Sometimes my kids just blow me away and this is one of those times. The photos look like the innards of a body but don't do it justice really. I find it fascinating but I'll leave him to it. My expertise is elsewhere though I understand his passion. The things that interest us can become obsessive and all consuming like this and I think this one is really up there in geek-land!
