This morning hubby and I went to discover Brompton Cemetery which is situated behind Chelsea Football Club! It has a few famous people buried there. The one I was interested in was Emmeline Pankhurst.
The cemetery was opened in 1840 to counter a soaring death toll and appalling overcrowded city churchyards and offered plots to customers. They built monuments and grand mausolea to accommodate several generations. There are certain very wild parts to the cemetery but it is a still a working cemetery. The uniqueness of this place is the open air cathedral affect with its colonnades and nave. Under the colonnades are the catacombs (open on set days for tours, as is the chapel). I was astounded by the amount of graves in this area, and though I've not seen war graves, this reminded me of them - the scale of it all. It was definitely worth a visit.
